Cerner's Open Platforms

Our unified Health Network Architecture was designed with three unique, open and interoperable platforms each built for specific purposes, embedded with intelligence and extensible. Our platforms are designed to provide great value when used together, yet each platform is also adaptable to connect with different systems.

  • Cerner Millennium® is our platform for our comprehensive electronic health record for clinical, operational and financial transactions. It’s highly adaptable and interoperable to serve a number of business strategies based on the needs of our clients
  • HealtheIntentSM, is a source-agnostic data and insights platform, that connects and transforms data from any EHR and a wide span of sources, both clinical and non-clinical, to enable meaningful actions and outcomes.
  • CareAware® is our platform that facilitates bi-directional medical device connectivity, communications and operations at scale. CareAware harnesses the expectations of the Internet of Medical Things by enabling interoperability between medical devices, health care applications and any EHR.

APIs allow third party developers to collaborate with Cerner to access and manipulate data. Depending how it is configured, an API can enable a system to send or retrieve data that can update an individual’s record or provide collective data that can be used to create reports. All of our platforms are designed to expose standard APIs that allow platform connectivity to enable app integration or access to population health data.

  • Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR): An API for exchanging electronic health records, with HL7® FHIR® being more convenient for developers. It is based on modern web-based API technology, which makes it easier for systems to exchange granular data elements that make up the patient’s record rather than entire documents. Together, SMART and FHIR enable clinicians to access pluggable apps directly within their workflow.
  • Substitutable Medical Applications and Reusable Technologies (SMART): SMART creates application interoperability allowing clinicians to substitute best of breed applications within the EHR. This is a win for developers, because once an app is created with SMART, it can be used across a number of platforms. Innovative developers will be able to reach a broader market of potential users, while at the same time enabling clinicians to have a more robust offering.

Together, SMART and FHIR enable clinicians to access pluggable apps directly within their workflow, enabling the creation of new technology that unlocks opportunities to advance health care. Learn more about working with SMART and FHIR at code.cerner.com.

Cerner Ignite APIsSM spur innovation and collaboration among a broader community of developers, enabling the creation of new technology that unlocks opportunities to advance health care. These APIs are cloud-based to allow rapid, agile deployment of future updates or enhancements. It also simplifies implementation because the ontology mapping process is centralized, which can reduce additional resourcing pressure.

  • Cerner Ignite APIs for MillenniumSM create the ability for your organization to purchase Provider apps that are available in our app gallery. Cerner Ignite APIs for Millennium also enables innovative organizations to build custom apps that fulfill edge needs. Apps can be built internally by your organization, or by any app company that is part of the Cerner Open Developer Experience (code) Developer Program. For more specific detail on available FHIR resources, please reference our documentation.
  • Cerner Ignite APIs for HealtheIntentSM allow access to population health concepts using RESTful APIs. These APIs are meant to be used by other systems and applications in a business to business (B2B) context. Learn more about Cerner Ignite APIs for HealtheIntent by reviewing the documentation.

Our industry-leading EHR analytics solution, Lights On Network®, provides data-driven analysis to help you understand adoption and performance of Cerner Ignite APIs for Millennium once you have implemented them.

Analyze near real-time data to gain insights into adoption rates, number of unique users and performance of each app so you have the supporting facts and quantitative data to make the best decisions.

If your organization is interested in building apps to meet niche workflow needs, we can help get your developers and IT team up to speed on building with Cerner Ignite APIs. Cerner offers a three-day introductory training program that will help your team learn skills to build on the Millennium platform.

Training offers education and hands-on exercises to help your team learn how to retrieve data with FHIR APIs, build a SMART app and secure the app. By the time they have completed training, your developers will be able to build a simple app in the Millennium sandbox.

We can bring the training to your facility. Ideal class sizes will be five people or less. To learn more about Cerner Ignite APIs, please contact us at IgniteTraining@cerner.com

Cerner has opened our technology platforms to a broad group of third-party and client innovators who are advancing digital health care. Innovators can take advantage of Cerner Open Developer Experience (code) to access the Cerner sandbox, developer tools and resources to start building apps on top of our open platforms. If you are a client innovator, we invite you to collaborate with us at code.cerner.com.

Once an innovator meets the prerequisites for app development, they may apply to become a member of the code Developer Program. The program creates opportunities for innovators to expand into new markets and strives to lower many of the traditional barriers to achieving smooth onboarding experiences with clients. The program is designed to provide transparent, predictable policies and processes to identify a path to commercialization. Learn more about next steps at code.cerner.com.

By balancing security, quality and workflow design, with speed of innovation, the code developer program is able to offer secure and scalable apps. Before an app can be integrated into a workflow, it must first pass of validation process, ensuring that:

  • Apps are production ready
  • Apps integrate well with the data set provided by the APIs
  • Apps fit within the electronic medical record workflow
  • Apps are documented for support and implementation

The validation process has four main categories of focus: security, functionality, user experience and operations. This process is based on the complexity of your application, the number of issues identified in the process and the responsiveness of developers. The goal is to ensure that the app can be integrated quickly and easily into client domains and works consistently.

Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) delivered its highly anticipated final rule on provisions of the Cures Act that support interoperability of electronic health information for patients, providers and others. In addition to a focus on HIT certification and interoperability in health care, the rule promotes the end of information blocking — a practice in which the access, exchange or use of electronic health information is restricted inappropriately.

We wholeheartedly support the open and appropriate flow of electronic health information in order to create a seamless and connected world where everyone thrives. Cerner champions a level playing field where use, access and exchange of information is done on a non-discriminatory and interoperable basis.

In the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) proposed rule for 2019 federal fiscal year, CMS changed the name of the EHR Incentive Program/MU to the Promoting Interoperability (PI) program, applicable to both Medicare and Medicaid. That name change is tied to a shift in the program away from incentives for EHR use and a refocusing of the program on interoperability.

Open APIs also help ignite innovation and collaboration among a broader community of developers, enabling the creation of new technology that unlocks opportunities to advance health care. Check out the apps that are currently available to integrate with Millennium.

Cerner Ignite APIs for Millennium

Cerner Ignite APIs for Millennium is the name for Cerner’s open APIs that allow outside apps to be integrated with the Cerner Millennium platform to fulfill niche workflows, optimize functionality and enable more informed decisions at the point of care. Cerner Ignite APIs for Millennium includes Cerner’s implementation of SMART Health IT and the HL7® Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) standard. Simply put, FHIR provides access to data within the EHR. SMART handles negation between an EHR and an app to allow a user experience on top of a secure connection to the FHIR resources for data access.

*FHIR is the registered trademark of HL7 and is used with the permission of HL7.

Cerner Ignite APIs for HealtheIntent

Cerner Ignite APIs for HealtheIntent enable API access to the various features of Cerner's population health platform, including aggregated longitudinal person records, registries and measures, risk scores, and other population-health-related information. Additionally, the HealtheIntent Data Syndication API allows bulk transport of large sets of longitudinal record information, which you can import and investigate in third-party data warehouses or research systems.
